About Us

About Us: We’re two cousins, more like sisters, going on a trip across the US. Katie, a recent college graduate, aka, knower of all things, is accompanying her cousin Emily on this once-in-a-lifetime adventure before heading back to California where she'll start a teaching credential program so she can edumacate the young children. Emily, who, after living in Costa Rica for six months (CR Blog), thinks of herself as a traveling machine, convinced Katie to come on this next big adventure.

The Route: Northern California Bay Area natives, we will start by heading straight down to San Diego, California. Then we’ll take the “southernmost” route across the US from SD to Savannah, Georgia. From Savannah, we’ll hug the East Coast to Boston, and will ultimately end in New Hampshire, where we’ll spend a few days with our family out there. Katie will fly home to start school…again, and Emily will bum around NH for the summer! We hope you enjoy reading about our road trippin adventures!

We also feel we should add that we bought a book called Road Trip USA: Cross-Country Adventures on America's Two-Lane Highways, written by Jamie Jensen, and have used it as the backbone of our journey. We followed a LOT of Jamie's suggestions and used information in the book to help tell about the places we went in our blog. So, if you're ever planning a x-country road trip, his website is a great place to start, and you can't beat having the book with you on the road!

Pacific Coast: Check

By 8:30 a.m., Emily was out of her house in Pleasanton and on her way to pick up Katie at her house in Livermore.  That means we were out on the open road by 9 a.m., only an hour after our ETD (expected time of departure, duh!).  We felt like that was a pretty great start since there was just stuff that needed to be done yo!

The ride down to San Diego was pretty straightforward.  I mean, it was just a matter of hopping on I5 and bombing down to LA; the standard trip to SoCal which we’ve both done a bazillion times, and Katie had just done it a few days prior when she went to Disneyland for a few days with her besties.  Anyhoo, we made our way down to LA in good time, but we still managed to hit some traffic, which did not make me very happy.  After a million hours of driving (okay, like 7) we were about an hour from San Diego and starting to lag.  It was definitely time for a coffee break, so we decided to make a pit stop in Oceanside for a quick cup of Joe.  Brilliant idea, except….every coffee-shop-style shop appeared to be closed.  Eventually we found one that was open, and, excited for some caffeine and to stretch our legs, we eagerly made our way to the counter, only to hear that they were not selling coffee because apparently the water company broke a water pipe, contaminating the water supply.  Since we decided against drinking poop coffee, we used the potties, which were still working, and headed directly to Emily’s friend Kate’s house.  Emily met Kate in college and they (and Kim!!) became extremely good friends when they lived together for 10 weeks in Washington DC for the UCDC program.  Kate took Emily and Katie to the La Jolla Cove for a super delicious dinner at the Crab Catcher.  We had stunning views, yummy food and great convos.

Yum!  Spicy oyster shots!!

Then we got some nice relaxing down time hanging out with Kate, Kate’s fiancé Matt, roommate Matt and SUPER adorable puppy Koa!  Katie and I couldn’t get enough of Koa—he’s the cutest ever!!

See!!  Look at that face!  Makes me miss my dog Roxy! And Katie misses Peanut!

After a day of laughing and chatting in the car, and then enjoying friend time, Katie and I were exhausted and ready for bed.  But we couldn't have asked for a better first day of travel!  If every day is as good as the first, we’re in for the best adventure ever!!

xoxo,
Emily
